25: Her Father’s Daughter

Ardaman swung his wizard’s stave at Lord Apostis. The Swordmaster deflected the attack, but purple lightning slashed his cheek as he did so. Spyrodon stooped beside Lord Dallion’s bed, getting his arms under the larger man, and started to lift him. He was surprisingly strong, Niama realized, for Lord Dallion’s weight did not deter him.

Niama reached to her side, but she had left her weapon back in her chamber. Ardaman and her father traded blows with increasing ferocity, but Ardaman appeared to be augmented in strength and speed by the wizard’s stave. Purple lightning kept crackling over his arms, and along his smiling teeth, then melding with his skin. He whispered dark words and she thought she heard fell voices rising to his aid.

A moment of indecision passed, and she ran out of the room, leaving Spyrodon calling after her that he needed the door held open. Her chamber lay nearby. She slammed the door open, dove for the bed, and ripped the feather mattress off the frame. There lay the healer’s sword in its sheath. She grabbed it and strapped it to her waist as she raced back.

At the door, she drew the healer’s sword.

Spyrodon hefted Lord Dallion in his arms, his hand reaching for the door. But now he stared at Niama as she entered. Ardaman was raining blows upon Lord Apostis’ swords. Niama raised her voice and the sword in her hands. "Sword of angels in my hand, bleed enemies of my band. Follow pure hearts and kindred souls, to the Almighty's scrolls. Light in the darkness, my hand heals the hopeless!"

Ardaman turned towards her, a sneer upon his lips. Then the healer’s sword blazed white as Niama charged him, and his eyes grew wide. He held up his hand and lightning sprang from it, but she advanced without fear and the healer’s sword absorbed his attack. She shouted as she swung at him, crossing her sword with his stave, then spinning and landing a fist to his stomach.

As Ardaman grunted and stumbled back to his knees, Niama glanced at Lord Apostis. “Father?” But the Swordmaster sank to his knees, grabbing at the burn upon his forearm. Purple lightning lived in the open wound, burning deeper into his flesh.

Following an instinct, and hearing the words of the healer’s sword in her mind, she fell beside her father. She touched the healer’s sword to his wound, whispering again, “Light in the darkness, my hand heals the hopeless.”

The purple lightning died in the wound, and Lord Apostis grinned broadly. He stood renewed and shoved her aside, raising his swords against another of the wizard’s attacks. “Bring it to me, Ardaman! Bring your envy, your wrath, your lack of self-worth,” he shouted. “Bring it all, and I will bring my gratitude to the
